आत्मा अविनाशी है

दास, तुम्हारा दिनांक 24/4/78 का लिखा पोस्टकार्ड मुझे प्राप्त हुआ।

तुम्हारे ज्येष्ठ भ्राता ने मुझे पत्र लिखा है कि कुछ दिनों से तुम्हारा चित्त चञ्चल हो रहा है । भोग करने की प्रवृत्ति चित्त में विद्यमान रहने से ही वह चित्त को अधिक चञ्चल करती है एवं वही अशान्ति प्रदान करती है। भोग के विषय – चाहे जागतिक वस्तुएँ हों अथवा स्त्री, दोनों ही नश्वर हैं। आत्मा अविनाशी है, अतः नश्वर वस्तुओं के द्वारा अथवा नश्वर वस्तु के सङ्ग से अविनाशी वस्तु को उद्वेग और अशान्ति प्राप्त होती है । तुम स्वयं ही इस विषय पर थोड़ा सा विचार करने से ही यह समझ पाओगे। इसके अतिरिक्त भोग के द्वारा रोग और भय भी प्राप्त होता है। अतः अपनी आत्मा एवं इन्द्रियों को [केवलमात्र ] वैकुण्ठ की सेवा में – पूर्ण की सेवा में – सत्-चित्- आनन्दमय की सेवा में नियोजित करने का प्रयत्न करना, वही सुखकर एवं शान्तिप्रद होगा।

तुम्हारे पूर्वाश्रम में बहुत अधिक विषय – सम्पत्ति नहीं है। यदि तुम घर लौटकर वहीं निवास करने लगते हो, तब जो भी सीमित सम्पत्ति वहाँ है, उसे लेकर झगड़ा एवं अशान्ति आरम्भ हो जाएगी। इसलिये भोग के पथ पर चरण नहीं रखना । सेवा के पथ का वरणकर वैकुण्ठ की ओर अपनी इन्द्रियवृत्ति को परिचालित करना, उसके द्वारा ही इन्द्रियों की सार्थकता होगी। तुम मेरा स्नेह – आशीर्वाद ग्रहण करना।

Dear recipient of my affection,

[REDACTED] dāsa, I received your postcard, dated 24 April, 1978. Your elder brother wrote to me saying your mind has been restless for quite some days. As long as the tendency for enjoyment remains within, it will make the mind restless and causes a lack of peace. Whether it be an object of pleasure or a woman, whatever you could possibly wish to enjoy is perishable. The soul, however, is imperishable. Perishable objects and their association agitate the imperishable and disrupt its peace. You can very easily grasp these things if you pay even slight attention to them. What’s more, enjoyment entails disease and fear, so try to engage your soul and senses in the service of Vaikuṇṭha, which is the service of the Whole, or that which is constituted of eternity, consciousness and bliss. This alone will bring you happiness and peace.

There is nothing abundant about the pleasures to be found in your material situation. Once you settle down at home, you will end up fighting over whatever commodities are there, which will in turn lead to indulgence. Do not, then, step foot on the path of indulgence. Channel your faculties into the path of service and toward Vaikuntha, the realm of the infinite. This will fulfill your senses, for it will fulfill their true purpose.
