बद्ध जीवों की सीमित स्वतंत्रता

साधु सभी जीवों के प्रति दयालु होते हैं। साधु बद्ध जीवों के दु:खों का मूल कारण, श्रीकृष्ण-विमुखता, को दूर करने की चेष्टा करते हैं; उन्हें भगवद्-भजन का उपदेश देते हैं व स्वयं अपने जीवन में भजन का आदर्श प्रस्तुत करते हैं।

प्रश्न : कुछ समय पहले मैं अपने पुराने मित्रों से मिला। एक समय हम साथ में बीयर व शराब पिया करते थे। भगवान कृष्ण की कृपा से मैं उसे छोड़ कर भक्ति के मार्ग पर चलना आरंभकर सका हूँ। मेरे मित्र अभी भी शराब पीते हैं व मांसाहार करते हैं। मेरी इच्छा है कि वे अपनी बुरी आदतें छोड़ दें। मैं किस प्रकार उनकी सहायता कर सकता हूँ?

श्रील गुरुदेव : मेरे विचार से आपकी समस्या के उपयुक्त समाधान के लिए श्रीमद्भागवत (तृतीय स्कंध, अध्याय पच्चीस) में वर्णित भगवान कपिल व देवहूति संवाद का अध्ययन लाभ दायक होगा। कपिल भगवान ने सच्चे साधु के लक्षणों का वर्णन किया है। प्रारंभ में तटस्थ लक्षणों का वर्णन करने के उपरांत उन्होंने साधु के स्वरूप लक्षण बतलाएँ हैं। तटस्थ लक्षण के सम्बन्ध में वे कहते हैं कि साधु सभी जीवों के प्रति दयालु होते हैं। साधु बद्ध जीवों के दु:खों का मूल कारण, श्रीकृष्ण-विमुखता, को दूर करने की चेष्टा करते हैं; उन्हें भगवद्-भजन का उपदेश देते हैं व स्वयं अपने जीवन में भजन का आदर्श प्रस्तुत करते हैं। इस प्रकार उपदेश प्राप्त करने पर भी, पूर्व जन्मों की दुष्प्रवृत्ति से अर्जित कुसंस्कारों के प्रभाव के कारण बद्ध जीवों में पाप करने की प्रवृत्ति विद्यमान रहती है।

एक मंगलाकांक्षी साधक जो अपनी दुष्प्रवृत्ति से निवृत्ति प्राप्त करने की इच्छा रखता है, उसे स्वयं ही उसके किए चेष्टा करनी होगी। उससे सहानुभूति रखनेवाले व्यक्ति आध्यात्मिक शिक्षा देकर बाह्य रूप से उसकी सहायता कर सकते हैं, किन्तु उसके लिए प्रयास तो उसे स्वयं के उपकर्म से ही करना होगा। ‘भगवान उनकी सहायता करते हैं, जो अपनी सहायता स्वयं करते हैं’, ‘अपनी सहायता स्वयं करें, भगवान आपकी सहायता करेंगे’ (जॉर्ज हर्बर्ट)। श्रीप्रह्लाद महाराज ने अपने आदर्श जीवन और शिक्षाओं द्वारा अपने पुत्र विरोचन को सुधारने का पूर्ण प्रयास किया, किन्तु वे असफल रहे। अपने सभी प्रयासों में असफल रहने पर भी वह असंतुलित नहीं हुए, क्योंकि वे जानते थे कि विरोचन अपने पूर्व जन्मों के संस्कारों के प्रभाव के कारण उनकी शिक्षाओं को ग्रहण कर भी सकता है और नहीं भी। भगवान व उनसे अभिन्न गुरुदेव बद्ध जीवों की सीमित स्वतंत्रता में बाधा नहीं देते हैं।

भगवान् सर्वशक्तिमान हैं; वे जो इच्छा करें, वह कर सकते हैं। किन्तु यदि वे बलपूर्वक बद्धजीव की स्वतंत्रता में बाधा देंगे तो जीव चेतनता से वंचित होकर जड़वत् हो जाएगा। चेतनता नष्ट होने पर न तो जीव को और न ही भगवान को कोई लाभ होगा। इसलिए भगवान व उनके पार्षद इस जगत् में अवतरित होकर मंगलेच्छु साधको को स्वेच्छा से उनके द्वारा दी गई शिक्षा के प्रति शरणागत होकर इसे स्वीकार करने के लिए समझाते हैं।

अपने मित्रों की सहायता करने का आपका प्रयास प्रशंसनीय है। आपको अपने प्रयास व अपने मित्रों के लिए स्नेह को कम नहीं करना है, किन्तु यदि आपके मित्र आपकी शिक्षाओं को स्वीकार करने में असमर्थ हैं तो आपको निराश नहीं होना है।

Relative Independence of the Conditioned Souls

Sādhus are compassionate to the conditioned souls. Sādhus try to remove the root cause of the miseries of conditioned souls, aversion to Śrī Krishna, by persuading them to worship the Supreme Lord and practicing that in their lives.

Question : Recently I met my old friends. Many years ago, we used to drink beer and wine. By the grace of Lord Krishna I was able to stop it and start following the path of bhakti. My friends still continue to drink and eat meat. I want them to quit their bad habits. How can I help them?

Śrīla Gurudev : I think it will be better to get a clear understanding for the solution of your problem, by going through the conversation of Kapil Bhagavān and Devahuti in the third canto, twenty-fifth chapter of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. Kapil Bhagavān has mentioned the qualities of a bona fide sādhu. First He has narrated the concomitant qualities and after that the original qualities of a sādhu. In mentioning the accompanying qualities, He has said that sādhus are compassionate to the conditioned souls. Sādhus try to remove the root cause of the miseries of conditioned souls, aversion to Śrī Krishna, by persuading them to worship the Supreme Lord and practicing that in their lives. But in spite of this the conditioned souls, due to their bad impressions from previous lives imbibed by evil propensities, have the aptitude to commit sins.

The aspirant, who desires to remove evil propensities, should try for himself to change his evil propensity. From outside, sympathetic persons may help him by spiritual instructions, but he has to try for this from his own initiative. ‘God helps those who help themselves’, ‘Help thyself and God will help thee’ (George Herbert). Śrī Prahlād Mahārāj tried his utmost to rectify his son Virochan by his own ideal life and teachings, but failed. However he did not become unbalanced, because he knew that in spite of his endeavour and teachings, his son may or may not accept his advice due to the influence of previous bad impressions. The Supreme Lord and His absolute counterpart gurudev do not interfere in the relative independence of the conditioned souls.

The Supreme Lord is Omnipotent; He can do whatever He likes. But if He forcibly interferes, the person will be bereft of consciousness. If consciousness is destroyed, neither the person nor the Supreme Lord will be benefited. So the Supreme Lord by His personal appearance in the world and His personal associates, tries to persuade the aspirant to submit to and accept His teachings willingly.

Your effort to help your friends is laudable. You should not stop your endeavour and affection for your friends but you should not be disheartened if your friends are unable to accept your teachings.
